Clinton, MO dentists discuss tips for keeping your child’s mouth healthy

Everyone was so friendly! And so great with kids!
~ E.G. (Feb 8, 2014)

From the moment you bring your child home from the hospital, you are faced with a completely new way of life. Learning how to care for your child’s needs properly is an evolving process that changes every day. In the same sense that you have to establish bedtime routines and eating schedules, it’s also important to establish an oral hygiene routine. Preventing oral conditions is much easier than treating problems after they occur. At our office, Drs. Sexauer and Gillis believe that healthy habits start very young. With the right combination of education, at-home care, nutrition, professional care, and establishing good dental habits, we can help ensure your child has a healthy mouth throughout life. We focus a lot on helping you learn the best ways to teach your child healthy habits that he or she can eventually maintain without supervision.

One of the biggest components of good oral health is consistency. Day in and day out, we find that while many patients may brush their teeth twice each day, they are rushing through the process and not doing it properly. If you rush through the process with your own teeth, chances are you may rush through it with your child. We encourage you to spend time brushing your teeth with your child. Do it for a full two minutes each time, making sure that all surfaces of the teeth are properly cleaned. Some parents find it helpful to brush their teeth first with the child watching and then help the child brush his or her own teeth. Find whatever works for your family and stick to it.

Another important piece of the puzzle is to start young. Begin brushing as soon as the first tooth erupts. Once your child expresses an interest in doing it, allow it, just make sure to check and follow-up that he or she did a good job.

In addition to properly caring for the teeth, nutrition plays a large role in oral health. Teach your children about the benefits of eating healthy and explain how it will help them grow and learn. Avoid foods or drinks that are high in sugar as they can lead to tooth decay.

Finally, maintaining your child’s regular dental visits will help him or her become comfortable at the dentist’s office and allows us to identify any potential issues early. If you are in the Clinton, MO area and you would like to schedule a consultation, call us today at (660) 885-6933.
